description

The Substructure - The Parkway Gardens, which were built in the years 1950 to 1955, was the last of Henry K. Holsman's many housing development designs in Chicago. Holsman began to build affordable housing when discrimination practices were common in Chicago, Illinois. He worked on several of the Chicago Housing Authority's major housing projects in the 1930s; later in the decade, he began developing his own projects with funding from the Federal Housing Authority. While Chicago's African-American population boomed from 1920 to 1970 due to the Great Migrations, discriminatory housing policies forced African-Americans to live in the "Black Belt" section of the city's South Side, which did not have enough housing to meet demands, leading to an overpopulation.

Black Disciples - In 1958, a group of young teenagers from Hyde Park, Englewood, and Kenwood came together as friends to create an alliance to combat their enemies. The founders—Richard Strong, David Barksdale, Mingo Shread, Prince Old Timer, Kilroy, Leonard Longstreet, Night Walker, and others—named their new organization the "Devil's Disciples." By the beginning of 1961, David Barksdale, also known as "King David," took sole leadership of the Devil’s Disciples, and appointed different members to oversee various areas within the neighborhoods. Barksdale's goal was to claim small gangs around the area, and turn them into factions of the Disciples. In 1966, in order to help increase recruitment and counteract threats from other gangs, David Barksdale created the “Black Disciples Nation,” which helped boost recruitment numbers into the thousands.

The most dangerous block in Chicago isn’t in Englewood or on the West Side. It’s a stretch of South King Drive, which is currently being called “O-Block.” Parkway Gardens earned the nickname "O'Block after 20-year-old Odee Perry was shot and killed by members of a rivals gang in 2011. Odee Perry was just one of 19 people shot and killed near this housing project between the years June 2011 and June 2014, making it the most dangerous block in Chicago in terms of shootings in that three-year period, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. On charts, it’s the 6400 block of South, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. But it’s just "O-Block" to people there and in frequent references to the road in the blood-drenched lyrics of Chief Keef and other Chicago rappers. The sprawling Parkway auditoriums low-income apartment complex sits on one side of the road. A string of businesses including an Auto Zone, a food emporium and the Chicago Crusader review lines the other. Before the name "O-Block" was given to the Parkway Gardens, 9 years after the Mickey Cobras were pushed out, the Black Disciples remaining in the Parkway Gardens gave the projects the name "WIIIC City," which represented the 3 Black Disciples.

O'Block Gang was founded on three principles: Family, Trust, and Grind. O'Block has always been focused on money but will turn the city red if needed be. when people pull up on some bs or trying to get some clout by pulling up to O we will make things hot. Family all members who go thru initation and the process of really being in trenches becomes family which is a big foundation for O'Block. Trust is a thing that can be hard to earn and extremely easy to lose, O'Block builds its brand by making sure the connections we are allied with a legitimate and long standing. From the soliders to the leaders all gang members are required to grind this a skill you must have.
